Background
This is national multi-centre survey of the management of Acute complete Ulnar Collateral Ligament injuries of the thumb Metacarpophalangeal joint.
Acute complete ruptures of the ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) of the thumb are common injuries accounting for approximately 50:100,000 presentations to Accident and Emergency departments. There is an associated significant individual and societal impact linked to inability to self-care, prolonged rehab, and time off work.
Despite the incidence and burden there is no clear consensus in the literature regarding the most effective way to manage these injuries; including the role of examination, imaging, surgery, splinting or the rehab protocol.
This lack of evidence and consequent uncertainty pose great challenges to treating clinicians, as well as making decisions particularly difficult for the affected patients. Therefore there is significant room for improving the evidence by which future practice can be guided. The UCLTEAR Survey will take a view of the spectrum of current clinical practice. It will help inform the development of a protocol for a future randomised controlled trial.
